TOKYO - An earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck off the eastern coast of Japan on Wednesday, the US Geological Survey reported.
The epicenter of the quake, which hit at 2358 GMT, was located in ocean waters, 195 kilometers (120 miles) southeast of Sendai on Japan's main island of Honshu.
There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the quake, which was at a depth of 30 kilometers.
The quake took place after Japanese public broadcaster NHK had reported a possible second test by North Korea, to the northwest of Japan.
Japan lies at the junction of four tectonic plates and endures about 20 percent of the world's most powerful earthquakes, which frequently jolt Tokyo and other major cities.
