The Denver Nuggets announced Tuesday that they have exercised their contract option on head coach George Karl, extending his tenure with the club through the 2009-2010 season.
Karl originally signed a six-year deal that included a team option after the first three years. He took over the Nuggets partway through the 2004-2005 season and has since posted a 76-46 regular-season record, the best winning percentage of any Denver head coach since the franchise entered the NBA 30 years ago. The team also claimed its first division title since 1988 last season.
"This franchise is moving in a great direction and I'm honored to be a part of it," Karl said. Owner Stan Kroenke added that the organization remains focused on building a championship-level roster.
Across 18 seasons with five NBA franchises, including Milwaukee, Seattle, Golden State, and Cleveland, Karl has accumulated 784 career wins, placing him 12th on the all-time list. He has avoided a losing season in 14 consecutive years.
