ANKARA, - Hansjoerg Kretschmer, the head of the Delegation of the European Commission to Turkey whose term in office expires next month, paid a farewell visit today to Deniz Baykal, leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP).
During the meeting, the outgoing EU official briefed Baykal on Turkey's EU screening process, sources said.
Baykal reportedly told Kretschmer that certain preconditions laid before Turkey caused a confidence crisis in relations, adding that he shared the same sense of mistrust toward the Union due to recent developments in Turkey-EU relations.
Baykal also told Kretschmer that he did not expect the government would sign the additional protocol, sources added.
Kretschmer told Baykal that difficulties might emerge during the process but he believed such difficulties would be overcome within the process, sources added.
