ADANA - ``Some of Turkey`s bird species face an imminent threat of extinction due to the destruction of wetlands, large scale dam projects, and the desiccation of marshes``, head of a nature association warned Friday.
Nature Association Director General Güven Eken said one out of every four bird species has become extinct over the last years, adding that the situation was even worse for water birds: "Population of three out of every four water bird species is severely reduced."
"Over 45 regularly-monitored bird species in Turkey, mostly predators, face imminent threat of extinction while the numbers of many other species are at critical levels," Eken said, adding that Turkey pushed away the opportunity to be the richest country of Europe in bird species.
``The association would launch a campaign this weekend to raise the consciousness and stage several events throughout the country``, Eken said. He also complained about lack of preservation efforts for birds in Turkey.
