ROME - After the hijacking incident of a Turkish Airlines (THY) jet ended without any casualties in Italy, the passengers of the jet have been evacuated and taken to the resting area of the Brindisi Airport.
The passengers are expected to be flown to Istanbul in the same jet.
Italian security officials have remarked that, contrary to earlier reports, there was only one single hijacker.
The hijacker was a Turkish national, Hakan Ekinci.
According to Italian news agencies, Hakan Ekinci is a Catholic who did not want to serve in Muslim Turkish Armed Forces. "Ekinci wrote a letter to Pope Benedict XVI and asked for the Pope`s help to be excluded out of the Turkish Armed Forces," said Italian sources.
Ekinci asked for political asylum from Italian authorities.
Meanwhile, Italian FM Massimo D`Alema stressed that the hijacking incident caused deep concern but ended peacefully. We must understand why such incidents take place, noted D`Alema.
