ISTANBUL GESTURE OF PAPANDREOU
Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou destroyed a 550 year old taboo in Greece in the first minutes of Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul's visit to Athens. Papandreou pronounced the name ''Istanbul'' after saying ''Costantinopoli'' and thus became the first Greek minister saying ''Istanbul''.
Papandreou said that Olympic fire would pass from Istanbul as well and at first he called Istanbul as ''Costantinopoli'', the name which was used during Byzantine period, and then he called as ''Istanbul'' and destroyed a taboo.

LOAN IS NOT SUSPENDED
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that suspension of U.S. loan was out of question and added that Turkey would accept the loan if it was given with the requested shape. Holding a press conference prior to his Kyrgyzstan visit, Erdogan said regarding the recent situation of the loan issue that suspension of loan was out of question and Turkey would accept the loan if it was given with the requested shape. He added that the conditions of the loan were very suitable and the first tranche of the loan would be given until the end of this month, noting that if it was given, Turkey would accept it.

PRESIDENTIAL PALACE IS PUBLIC PLACE, HEADSCARF IS NOT USED
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, who prevented the usage of headscarf by sending different invitations to Parliament members for the reception to be held for October 29 Republic Day, said that Presidency represented Republic and it was a public place and headscarf was not used at public places.

OLYMPIC FIRE TO COME TO ISTANBUL
Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou said during Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul's visit to Athens that he wanted to carry Olympic fire to Istanbul by himself and he added that Olympic fire would pass from Istanbul Strait and Sultanahmet district.
Announcing that Olympic fire of 2004 Athens Olympic Games would pass from Istanbul, Papandreou told Milliyet that he would like to carry the Olympic fire by himself.

ISSUE OF USD 8.5 BILLION IS COMPLICATING
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that if U.S. loan worth of 8.5 billion dollars was given as requested shape, Turkey would accept it. Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said that they were not in a hurry and State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullatif Sener said that the loan could be given in the end of this month. The government gave a start for the usage of the first tranche of the loan. Council of Ministers adopted the loan agreement which was signed in Dubai and the preliminary step of procedure was completed.

EU REVOLUTION MADE IN TCK
Turkish Penal Code (TCK) Draft Law which amends TCK completely was arranged according to the European Union (EU) norms in Parliamentary Justice Commission. The article on ''protection of individual rights and freedoms'' was added to the aims of the law.

DELICATE WARNING FROM ATHENS
While Greek Foreign Minister George Papandreou and Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul could not make progress on the issues of Cyprus and Aegean, sides reached a consensus on passing Olympic fire from Istanbul and on prevention of double taxation. Papandreou said that the date May 2004 should be considered as an opportunity, not a threat regarding Cyprus issue.

GALATASARAY SAYS CONTINUE
Galatasaray defeated Greek Olympiakos team 1-0 with the goal of Cihan in Group D of the Champions League. It became the first victory for Galatasaray in eight Champions League games.

CYPRUS DISCUSSION HEATED
Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas said that Ankara should show its support to TRNC more clearly and if Annan Plan was accepted, Turkish Cypriots would be eliminated, adding that however, there were people who still wanted to discuss this plan. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan responded Denktas and said that Turkey's determination in Cyprus was known and added that if those who could not solve the issue for 40 years expected 11 month of government to solve, it would not be fair.

WOMAN HAND ON TCK
Woman organizations won the first round in their struggle regarding Turkish Penal Code (TCK). Sub-commission changed the description 'woman' on the ground of discrimination.

RETURN TO CENTRAL ASIA
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey did the most ideal thing about Cyprus issue until today. Erdogan replied to questions of reporters while going to Kyrgyzstan and when recalled the statement of Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas who said that Ankara should show its support more clearly, Erdogan said that Turkey had done every necessary thing which was different from the previous administrations until now.
Associated Press (AP) news agency made interesting evaluations regarding the tour of Erdogan covering Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan. AP said that Erdogan was planning to rebuild Turkey's interests in Central Asia many years after Ozal.

YILDIRIM: USD 10 THOUSAND RESTRICTION IS A POLITICAL EMBARGO
Istanbul Trade Chamber (ITO) Executive Board Chairman Mehmet Yildirim said that Iraqi Governing Council's restriction on outflow of foreign exchange with 10 thousand dollars was an embargo imposed not only Turkey's commercial existence in Iraq but also its military and diplomatic authority.

LOAN WORTH OF 8.5 BILLION DOLLARS NOT SUSPENDED

Galatasaray defeated Olympiakos 1-0 in its third match in Group D of the Champions League. It was the first victory for Galatasaray in eight Champions League games. The victory gives Galatasaray three points in the group.
