Thailand's military seized power on 19 September 2006, with army chief General Sonthi Boonyaratglin announcing a coup against Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra late Tuesday.
Shortly after the announcement, Sonthi joined the navy and air force chiefs for an audience with King Bhumibol Adulyadej at the royal palace in Bangkok. The meeting lasted more than two hours, according to a palace official.
The military leaders left for army headquarters after the session without addressing reporters.
