A Swiss research team, writing in Nature in 2006, warned that Europe's recent pattern of destructive floods and lethal heatwaves could become routine by the end of the century. The cause, they argued, lies in a deepening disruption between air temperature and land moisture as global warming intensifies.

The Mediterranean's hot, dry climate zone will push northward as temperatures climb. In central and eastern Europe, this sets off a feedback loop: rising heat draws moisture out of soil and plants faster than it can be replenished, amplifying heatwave severity. In wetter northern areas, the opposite holds: extra warmth and airborne moisture turbocharge the rainfall cycle, raising flood risk. Changing vegetation, such as forests yielding to heat-tolerant scrub, will also reshape local moisture dynamics.

The stakes are clear from the recent record: the 2003 heatwave killed up to 35,000 people across the continent, and severe floods struck in 2002 and 2005. Lead researcher Sonia Seneviratne of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology used a model with nearly twice the resolution of prior climate simulations.

A companion paper in the same Nature issue found no evidence that shifts in solar brightness over the past millennium played any significant role in observed global warming.
