BEIRUT - British Prime Minister Tony Blair's spokesman welcomed Monday an announcement that Palestinians had agreed on the formation of a national unity government.
"We welcome the announcement by President (Mahmud) Abbas that he believes he has reached a basis for a national unity government after his talks in Gaza," the spokesman said just before Blair left Beirut after a brief visit.
"Of course, we have to see the details, but potentially, and I stress, potentially, this is a highly significant announcement, and we will want to see the details and how this unfolds over the coming days."
Asked if the were a breakthrough for peace with Israel, he said: "I think it's a serious statement, potentially a hugely significant statement, but let events unfold. We're not going to get ahead of ourselves."
