NEW YORK - Switzerland`s Roger Federer won the US Open men`s singles title on Sunday defeating American Andy Roddick 6-2, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 in the final.
Federer became the first player to complete the Wimbledon-US Open sweep for the third consecutive year.
The 25-year-old Swiss captured his ninth Grand Slam and third major title of 2006 and he did it in superb fashion by dropping only one set in the tournament.
Federer had his full arsenal of weapons on display Sunday serving brilliantly against Roddick and barely breaking a sweat in getting three breaks in the first set in front of a crowd of 23,000 at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
After Roddick took the second set in 37 minutes, Federer won the third set 7-5 with the only break coming in the final game.
Federer got two more early breaks in the forth set against a tired-looking Roddick, taking the final eight of nine games of the 2hr, 27mins match.
