SAKARYA - A 40-cm and approximately 2-kg fish, caught by a fisherman in Sapanca Lake in northwestern city of Sakarya was alleged to be a piranha.
According to the information received by the A.A reporter, a fisherman got suspicious about a fish that he caught in the Asagi Derekoy region of Sapanca Lake as the fish had teeth different from the ones he had caught before.
The fish was taken to the Sapanca Aqua-Products Research Center of Istanbul University`s Faculty of Aqua-Products for further study to determine whether it is really a piranha.
"Most probably, it is a piranha. It looks like the previously captured species", said Erdogan Guven, director of the center.
Erdogan indicated that fish species like piranha can not survive in Sapanca Lake and therefore those fish might have been left into the lake.
On August 23rd and 26th, piranhas had been caught at two different locations in Sapanca Lake. One of the piranhas that were caught alive is still being kept in an aquarium in the research center in Sapanca. This piranha has not eaten the food it has been offered for 10 days.
