An international watchdog began examining Türkiye's financial crime framework on 4 September 2006. The Financial Action Task Force (FATF), operating under the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), launched the assessment to determine whether Türkiye has adequate legislation to address money laundering and the financing of terrorism.
Over 12 days, a FATF delegation held meetings with officials from 37 separate institutions. The review followed an earlier phase in which Türkiye was required to respond to 251 written questions on the same subjects.
Once the in-country visits conclude, FATF will submit its findings to the OECD General Assembly. Founded in 1989, FATF is an intergovernmental policy-making body dedicated to encouraging legislative and regulatory action against money laundering and terrorist financing at both the national and international levels.
