A British tourist was killed and two other people were wounded when an unknown gunman opened fire at a group of Western tourists in the Jordanian capital Amman on Monday, the Foreign Office confirmed.
"We can confirm that a British national has been killed sadly, in addition there are two other British nationals injured," said a ministry spokesman, adding that they had been visited by consular officials.
The killing happened when a gunman opened fire at a Roman amphitheatre. Five other tourists were injured - two British women as well as tourists from New Zealand, the Netherlands and Australia. The gunman was arrested.
Jordanian Interior Minister Eid al-Fayez said the gunman had been arrested and was now being questioned. He said it was not clear yet whether the gunman was acting alone or was a member of any group.
