JAKARTA - A strong 6.1-magnitude earthquake jolted Indonesia's eastern islands of Maluku Monday but no damage or casualties were reported, officials said.
The quake which struck at 8:18 am (2318 GMT Sunday) was centered some 146 kilometres (90 miles) southwest of the town of Tual on the Kai islands in Maluku's Southeast district, officials of the Meteorological and Geophysiscs Office told AFP.
Its center was 33 kilometres under the floor of the Banda Sea.
Indonesia, which sits on the "Pacific Ring of Fire", where continental plates meet causing frequent seismic and volcanic activity, was the nation worst hit by the December 2004 Asian tsunami.
A 7.7-magnitude earthquake in July on the south coast of the main island of Java killed more than 600 people.
