ISTANBUL - Surgeons of the Istanbul University School of Medicine- Department of Pediatric Cardiology, have succeeded in repairing ventricular septal defects (VSD) in five children aged between 3.5 and 10 without chest incision.
Dr. Ziyad Hijazi from the Chicago University was also in attendance in surgical operations at the Cerrahpasa hospital on Monday.
Following the operations, Prof. Dr. Levent Saltik told the A.A, ''this technique of repairing VSD with angio-cardiography was performed by Ankara Hacettepe University for the first time in Turkey, last year. Our hospital is the first medical center performing the same technique in Istanbul.
The technique allows us to treat patients without chest incision. As a result, those children will not have any scar. Also, they will be discharged from hospital tomorrow. If they had undergone an open heart surgery, they would have spent a day at the intensive care unit, and a week at hospital.
Nearly 30 patients have been treated with this technique since 2005.''
