ANKARA - Turkish theses were supported and the measures that Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) has taken in recent period were found positive in the final statement of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) meeting which was held in New York as parallel to the United Nations General Assembly.
Diplomatic sources said on Friday that expressions that were supporting Turkish theses took place in the final statement over the reaction of Turkish representatives to the draft presented to OIC.
In the final statement, the OIC said the efforts of U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan to reach a just solution by negotiations on the basis of equality between two sides in Cyprus were pleasing.
OIC was pleased with the recent suggestions and measures of TRNC, including the free passages, and it supported the measures which brought a positive atmosphere to the island, the statement added.
Diplomatic sources said that this decision of OIC ministers was a confirmation of support given by Islamic countries to Turkish side in Cyprus issue. They emphasized that news stories, which were reflecting uneasiness against the decision, were published in Greek Cypriot press.
Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said in his arrival to Ankara yesterday that theses of Turkey and TRNC took place in the decision and they were supported, adding, ''view supporting rightful case of Muslim Turkish Cypriot people was given place in the report. Measures of Turkish Cypriot side which created a positive atmosphere on the island were welcomed.''
