JERUSALEM - Around 100 demonstrators gathered Thursday night in Tel Aviv to call for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to resign over the Israeli military offensive in Lebanon, public television said.
The demonstrators carried posters of Olmert, Defense Minister Amir Peretz and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni bearing the slogan: "Defeatists, get out!"
Some also carried signs that read "Olmert=Chamberlain," in reference to Neville Chamberlain, the British prime minister from 1937 to 1940 who signed the Munich Pact with Nazi Germany and was criticized for his policy of appeasement toward Adolf Hitler's regime.
The Israeli government has faced harsh domestic criticism over its conduct in the 34-day offensive to root out Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah.
The massive air and ground operation killed more than 1,150 Lebanese civilians, while at least 41 Israelis were killed by Hezbollah rocket fire and dozens of Israeli soldiers killed in clashes with Hezbollah militants.
