KARS - Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) President Rauf Denktas said on Tuesday that U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan's plan was prepared with Greek Cypriots and stated that this plan would destroy Turkish Cypriot people.
Denktas told the A.A correspondent that the European Union (EU) violated international agreements and stated that the EU that was defeated by blackmails of Greece took no notice of violation of international agreements.
Stressing that Turkey did not bow to illegitimacy on Cyprus issue, Denktas said that Turkey backed rights of Turkish Cypriot people by giving notes when it was necessary.
Denktas said that U.S. Ambassador supported the opposition by acting inappropriately and noted, ''we consider the United States as a friend of us. But its interests don't comply with our interests. We should protect our interests. Some people want to make Turkish Cypriots migrants again. They try to destroy the principles to which we attribute importance. They act according to the hypothesis that Greek Cypriot gave up their policy to make Cyprus a Greek Cypriot island. But all things show that Greek Cypriots did not give up this policy. Greek Cypriots' application to the EU proves that they want to remove Turkey from the island and turn Turkish Cypriots into a minority.''
''In fact, they prevent peace by supporting Greek Cypriot administration which had been continuing its efforts to possess whole Cyprus by doing the same thing what Milosevic did by force contrary to the constitution. It is thought-provoking that the United States, which declared war on terrorism, supported Greek Cypriot administration which is on the way of seizing all rights of Turkish Cypriot people with terror and mass graves in Cyprus,'' he noted.
Denktas said that a system based on injustice was being imposed on the island and stated that Annan's plan was prepared in cooperation with Greek Cypriots and this plan would destroy Turkish Cypriot people. He added that it could not be accepted.
He said that the opposition did not recently emerge in Cyprus, but it was showed as if it was newly emerged. Denktas said, ''the opposition had already been existing in Cyprus. Those people were against cooperation with Turkey too.''
Emphasizing that opposition in Cyprus was supported by Greek Cypriots and foreigners, Denktas said that the reason why the voice of opposition could be heard more was the support of Greek Cypriots and foreigners, but in return, the voice of majority could not be heard. He added that the power of opposition has not exceeded 30 percent in TRNC so far. He said when the support of Greek Cypriots and external world to the opposition were seen and its reasons were understood, the opposition could not reach even this percentage. He said that however, the voice of opposition would be heard more as they started to use the financial support of Greek Cypriots and the European Union for this aim.
Noting that those, who had seen Turkish Cypriots as a minority and did not want Turkey to interest in Cyprus since the past, were imposing pressure on him, Denktas said, ''the pressure has increased. If you keep a person under pressure as he has been defending the national case of people, you make him get used to pressure. Pressures are imposed to make us minority and exclude Turkey from the island and for this reason our resistance is increasing.''
Noting that Turkey was trying to fulfill necessary criteria to join EU, Denktas said that in case Turkey fulfilled the necessary criteria, new obstacles would be prepared against it.
Denktas said that decisions were adopted at European parliaments such as withdrawal of Turkish soldiers from the island and Turkish Cypriots to know their limits.
Denktas said, ''decisions regarding Armenians are also adopted at European parliaments. Even if Turkey fulfills all necessary criteria for the EU, obstacles in case of an approval are being prepared. Many issues including Aegean issue after the Cyprus question will be presented against Turkey.''
