ANKARA - Turkey on Monday expressed sorrow over killing of Iraqi Governing Council member Akila al-Hashemi and harshly condemned the attack.
Foreign Ministry issued a statement and recalled that Al-Hashemi died last week because of a terrorist attack.
The statement said Al-Hashemi was a target of the terrorists in the first stage of the political transition period that targeted Iraqi people to have their sovereignty.
In the statement, it was noted that Turkey attracted the attention that those who hoped benefit from such acts of violence on behalf of Iraqi people in fact disrupted the path that would provide Iraqi people with control over their own fate.
''We hope that Iraqi people will start their free, prosperous, and democratic life as soon as possible without being daunted from such attacks,'' it said.
Akila al-Hashemi died after she had been injured in a terrorist attack on September 20 near her house in Baghdad.
