ANKARA - Gen. Ilker Basbug, Commander of the 1st Army, is appointed as new Turkish Land Forces Commander and Gen. Isik Kosaner, Deputy Chief of General Staff, is appointed Gendarmery General Commander, it was announced on Friday.
Decisions made in regular meeting of the Supreme Military Council in August were made public today.
On July 31st, Turkish President Ahmet Necdet Sezer signed into law a Council of Ministers decree appointing Land Forces Commander Gen. Buyukanit the new chief of General Staff, as of August 30th, 2006.
Gen. Buyukanit will assume the command of the Turkish Army for 2 years (which is actually 4 years) because of the age limit.
According to the decisions made at the Supreme Military Council, 32 generals and admirals were promoted to a higher rank, 47 colonels became generals or admirals.
Meanwhile, it was reported that 17 military staff were expelled from the Turkish Armed Forces because of their undisciplined conducts.
