BUYUKANIT TO TAKE OVER POST ON AUGUST 28TH
Turkish Land Forces Commander Gen. Yasar Buyukanit was appointed as the new chief of the General Staff. Buyukanit will attend the meeting of National Security Council on August 21st as the commander of Land Forces but he will take over the post of Chief of General Staff from Gen. Hilmi Ozkok on August 28th.
SUMMIT FOR ELECTRICITY
Turkish Energy & Natural Resources Ministry officials informed four ministers on alternative schemes to solve bottlenecks faced in power generation, during a mini summit held in Ankara. State Minister & Deputy PM Abdullatif Sener, State Minister Ali Babacan, Finance Minister Kemal Unakitan and Energy & Natural Resources Minister Hilmi Guler attended the meeting. Participants underlined that Private Consumption Tax (OTV) is indeed a consumption tax and it would be wrong to levy it on (electricity) production. They focused on the matter that if OTV is waived, a new resource will be granted to Petroleum Pipeline Corp. (BOTAS) and the need to hike natural gas and electricity prices will drop.

MIDEAST BIGGEST RISK FOR TURKISH ECONOMY
Koc Holding Honorary President Rahmi Koc said that he did not expect an economic crisis in the country for the following period but the war in the Middle East was the biggest risk for Turkish economy.
ERDOGAN`S ADDRESS TO NATION
In a televised address to the nation, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, ``the terrorist organization PKK continues to kill our citizens. Our patience is about to exhaust. We will pursue our fight against the terrorist organization with great determination and belief.`` Referring to the Cyprus issue, he said, ``embargoes imposed unfairly on the Turkish Cypriot people for years, should come to an end now. Both Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) are ready to fulfil their commitments to reach a fair and lasting solution on the island. We are determined to extend all kinds of support to the TRNC to accomplish its economic and social development.``

EARLY APPOINTMENT TO AVOID A POSSIBLE CRISIS
Council of Ministers has signed the decree for General Yasar Buyukanit`s appointment as the chief of the General Staff before the meeting of Supreme Military Court and sent it to the President`s Office yesterday. President Ahmet Necdet Sezer signed the decree the very same day. It was learned that the government has done the procedures this fast in order to avoid possible gossips and speculations.
WHO IS THE TURK THAT WORKED FOR CIA?
Philip Giraldi, who worked at CIA`s Istanbul Office, revealed that an important Turkish official worked for American Intelligence voluntarily between 1986 and 1996. Former CIA agent Philip Giraldi who worked at CIA`s Istanbul Office as a chief deputy between the years 1986 and 1996 has revealed that Istanbul was the headquarters of CIA between those years.

GENERAL STAFF DENIES NEWS REPORT IN SABAH DAILY
Turkish General Staff denied a news report (in Sabah daily) alleging the existence of a plan which aimed to disarm separatist terrorist organization (PKK) and on which high-ranking executives agreed. General Staff noted, ``news reports claimed that there is a plan on which high-ranking Turkish authorities reached an agreement to disarm separatist terrorist organization members. Such news reports are not correct.``

ISTANBUL: HQ OF CIA IN EUROPE
Former CIA agent Philip Giraldi who worked at CIA`s Istanbul Office as a chief deputy between the years 1986 and 1996 revealed that Istanbul was the headquarters of CIA between those years. Giraldi said, ``Istanbul was the largest CIA base in Europe when I was there. Since the Cold War was still going on, most officers were involved in monitoring the Soviet Navy, which had to pass through the Bosphorus to get into the Mediterranean. The CIA did not make much of an effort to develop good sources among Turks because it was extremely perilous to do so, both in terms of U.S. broader equities and because the Turks were very aggressive in a counter-intelligence sense.``
HAZELNUT PRODUCERS SHAKE AKP GOVERNMENT
The governmental Justice & Development Party (AKP) was shocked by a protest held in northeastern city of Ordu. Nearly 80,000 hazelnut producers held a demonstration in Ordu to protest AKP. A total of 35 people were detained and 51 people were injured during the protest.

ELECTRICITY PROBLEM TO BE OVERCOME WITH PRICE HIKE
Private power suppliers met four ministers during a summit held to find solutions to problems in the energy sector. It is expected that there will be rise in natural gas and electricity prices.
HAZELNUT PRODUCERS PROTEST GOVERNMENT
Hazelnut producers held a demonstration in northeastern city of Ordu to protest the government. More than 100,000 people criticized the government. On the other hand, the government decided to set up a committee to find solution to problems of hazelnut producers.

THERE WILL BE NO WINNERS, ERDOGAN
``Turkey will continue to seek peace and advocate justice in the Middle East and other parts of the world. Recent war in the Middle East has been triggering fury and violence, and further inciting terrorism. This war is not fair. There will be no winners. On the contrary, it will lead to the defeat of the humanity as a whole,`` Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a televised address to the nation. Erdogan said, ``we want peace, tranquillity, prosperity and justice for the humanity. Unfortunately, the humanity failed to preserve peace and universal values at the age of scientific and technical developments.``
CICEK: ``WE ARE AGAINST EVERY KIND OF TERRORISM``
``Diplomatic initiatives are underway to ensure tranquility and quell crisis in the Middle East,`` Turkish government spokesman & Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said following the Council of Ministers meeting. Cicek underlined, ``we are against every kind of terrorism. Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will attend the meeting of Organization of Islamic Conference (OIC) which will take place this week.``

Buyukanit as the new chief of General Staff as of August 30th, 2006. On the other hand, Supreme Military Council of Turkey (YAS) will convene under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to make decisions on promotion and retirement of several military personnel of Turkish Armed Forces (TSK).

EXPORTS UP
Exports by Turkey were up 25,6 percent to 7.5 billion USD while imports rose 18,6 percent to 11.7 billion USD in June 2006. Turkish Institute of Statistics (TUIK) made public foreign trade figures in June and in the January-June period. Foreign trade deficit rose 7,9 percent going up from 3.9 billion USD to 4.2 billion USD, but the ratio of exports meeting imports accrued, going from 60,7 percent to 64,3 percent in June. In January-June period, exports were up 11,5 percent to 39.4 billion USD, and imports climbed 18,3 percent to 65.1 billion USD.
