SULTANS QUALIFY FOR FINAL
''The Sultans of the Net'' qualified for the final in the European Volleyball Championship for the first time in Turkey's history. National women's volleyball team defeated the Netherlands 3-0 in the semifinal match yesterday and qualified for the final. We want our girls to defeat Poland in the final and become ''the Sultans of Europe.''

EU DUE IN TURKEY FOR SECRET INSPECTION
European Union (EU) officials will inspect implementation of reforms in Turkey during 2004. The EU Commission has started the screening process. EU officials will inspect whether or not Turkey is sensitive about fight against torture, whether or not ban on ethnic names is lifted, whether or not education and broadcasting in different languages are allowed, whether or not deficiencies in foundations are overcome and whether or not domestic law abides by the European Convention on Human Rights.

UZANS TO PAY 4.26 BILLION U.S. DOLLARS
U.S. Court of Appeals rejected objection of the Uzans to 4.26 billion U.S. dollars of compensation it was fined. The Uzan family was fined to 4.26 billion U.S. dollars of compensation by New York court on July 31. The family later appealed the decision. The Court of Appeals rejected Uzans' application saying that ''they were outlaws.''

BILSAT IN ORBIT
Turkey's first observation microsatellite (BILSAT) was launched from Russia yesterday after 24 hours of delay. The satellite went into orbit and first information was received by the ground station in Ankara.

SPECIAL PRAISE TO AK PARTY
Turkey will see a new thing in the European Union (EU) Progress Report this year: Positive steps, which have been welcomed in the reports until now, are explained one by one for the first time and a special praise paragraph was reserved for the government. The paragraph says, ''EU adjustment packages were adopted by the parliament without any problems. The government knows what it wants and acts determinedly. In spite of some problems, it records progress on the path of EU with good will and sincerity.''

GOLDEN GIRLS WRITES HISTORY
National women's volleyball team wrote history in European Volleyball Championship and qualified for finals. 12 Giant Women defeated the Netherlands 3-0 in semifinals.

LOAN BY-PASS TO PARLIAMENT
State Minister Ali Babacan said that the 8.5 billion U.S. dollars of loan agreement would come into force with the decision of the Council of Ministers. The government has assured the United States that it will not go to north of Iraq on its own when signing the agreement. Babacan said, ''officials of the Treasury say that authority of the parliament is not needed since it is an economic agreement.''

GUL MEETS WITH ANNAN
Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul met with United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan in New York. Gul and Annan took up Iraq and Cyprus issues. Stressing that Turkey had always wanted a solution on Cyprus, Gul said that negotiation process could gain momentum after the elections in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).

THEY WALKED FOR PALESTINE AND IRAQ
''An End to Occupation in Iraq and Freedom to Palestine'' demonstration was held in Ankara, Istanbul and southern Adana province as well as many other cities in the world. The United States and Justice and Development Party (AK Party) were protested in the demonstrations organized by Global Peace and Justice Commission. Four thousand people joined the demonstration in Ankara while two thousand people participated in the demonstration in Istanbul. One person who was among Islamic groups was detained in the demonstration.

CYPRUS' PULSE TAKEN IN U.N.
When Cyprus diplomacy was made during the United Nations (U.N.) General Assembly, Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul paid attention to giving optimistic messages about solution of Cyprus issue and his Greek counterpart George Papandreou said that U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan was ready to intervene in the process again.

Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul, who did not comment on the time of sending soldiers to Iraq, said that if the decision was presented to parliament, he believed that the events which were experienced on March 1 would not be repeated. Gul said, ''Justice and Development Party group will support any decision of the government about dispatch of soldiers.''

CRITICAL VISIT
British Minister of State for Armed Forces Adam Ingram and British Chief of General Staff Michael Walker will come to Turkey. They will meet with Chief of General Staff Hilmi Ozkok and discuss dispatch of soldiers to Iraq.
