Foreign Minister Gul Meets With U.N. Secretary General Annan

NEW YORK - Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul met late on Friday with United Nations (U.N.) Secretary General Kofi Annan.
In the meeting, Gul offered his condolences over death of special envoy Sergio Vieira de Mello and other U.N. staff in an attack staged on U.N. office in Baghdad on August 19.
Gul and Annan took up Iraq and Cyprus issues in their meeting.
Stressing that Turkey had always wished that a lasting solution was reached in Cyprus, Gul said that negotiation process was expected to gain momentum after the elections to be held in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) in December.
Gul added that both sides should exert efforts to solve the issue.
Annan drew attention that attitude of neighbor countries was important for settlement of stability in Iraq and added that they welcomed positive contributions of Turkey.
