WASHINGTON D.C. - The United States welcomes the outcome of the tripartite meeting among United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs Ibrahim Gambari, President Mehmet Ali Talat of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) and Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos, U.S. State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said on Wednesday.
McCormack, in a news conference, said, ``we look forward to the start of talks by the end of the month, as agreed by the leaders, on both everyday and substantive issues,`` and he expressed hope the contacts will lead to comprehensive negotiations.
McCormack said the United States stands ready to assist the UN and the two sides in this important effort and continue to encourage the parties to remain flexible and engaged.
When asked about Annan Plan, McCormack did not refer to the plan and said that this recent development is very promising.
