Turkey Is Searching For Support For Its Security Council Candidacy

NEW YORK - Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul, who is currently in New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly meetings, is carrying on lobbying activities for Turkey's candidacy to Security Council membership.
Gul is recalling his all colleagues that Turkey is a candidate for Council membership and he requests support.
Meanwhile, Turkey signed agreement documents with some countries that were envisaging mutual support. Southern Korea is one of these countries.
Turkey has become a candidate for U.N. Security Council membership for 2009-2010 period after 50 years of interval.
U.N. sources told A.A correspondent that two members from Western Europe group would be changed in the period for which Turkey becomes a candidate.
If the number of candidates does not exceed two, Turkey will be chosen to Council membership automatically. If a third country becomes candidate, a voting will be held.
Election regarding candidate countries for 2009-2010 period will be held in U.N. General Assembly in October 2008.
If Turkey is elected, its membership will start on January 1, 2009 and end on December 31, 2010. Turkey will also chair Security Council when its turn comes alphabetically throughout its membership.
