UNITED NATIONS - The bombardment of a UN post in south Lebanon on Tuesday left up to four UN observers dead, a UN spokeswoman said.
The US envoy to the United Nations John Bolton said ambassadors from the permanent members of the UN Security Council were told about the dead from the reported Israeli attack during a meeting to discuss Iran.
Deputy UN spokeswoman Marie Okabe said "there are two military observers at the patrol base confirmed dead and two more feared dead". She said UN Secretary General Kofi Annan would issue a statement about the deaths.
Bolton said he had no other details. "It is something we take seriously," he said. "We are going to focus on this incident, see what we can find out about it."
French ambassador Jean-Marc de La Sabliere, president of the Security Council for July, said: "We condemn this bombing on a UNIFIL position."
"As president of the council I can say that we support UNIFIL. We support the soldiers," the French envoy added.
