Gul: Duty Of United Nations To Provide International Peace And Security Is More Than Ever

ANKARA - Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul said United Nations (U.N.) had undertaken the biggest duty in fight against terrorism.
Gul issued a message on the occasion of September 21 International Day of Peace.
In the message, Gul said Turkey would continue to fulfill its duties in settlement of peace.
Stating that U.N., throughout 58 years, has considered strengthening peace among all peoples on the world an ideal for itself, Gul said, ''we are all obliged to support activities of the U.N., which is the only institution that may put forth common will of international community with its universal quality, aiming to overcome threats against peace and security, prevent clashes, fight against poverty, overcome economic and social inequality, and increase prosperity.''
Gul said role undertaken by the U.N. in settlement of peace and security was more than every, stating that, ''international public has accepted that U.N. has the biggest duty in fight against terrorism. The U.N. has so far led many international initiatives in fight against terrorism. Turkey has actively participated in those initiatives. Turkey will continue to expend support to the steps that would be taken from now on, and will also continue to share its experiences in fight against terrorism.''
Gul said Turkey was loyal to the principles and targets of the U.N., and would continue to fulfil its liabilities.
In his message Gul said Turkey, as one of the 51 founder member countries of the U.N., continuously exerted efforts, and supported all the efforts expended for preservation of peace and security. He said Turkey provided humanitarian and technical aid, and recalled that it had important contributions to U.N. efforts to preserve peace.
Gul said Turkey, which had been contributing to efforts of the U.N. for preservation of peace since the Korean War, also actively participated in missions in Somalia, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Georgia, and Middle East and commanded the International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan.
In the message, Gul said, ''we believe that Turkey, which acts as bridge between the east and the west, and between the north and south due to its special location, constitutes an example to all the world nations with the 'peace in the country, peace in the world' principle of Great Leader Ataturk.''
Gul said Turkey would continue to support the initiatives to help the U.N. personnel work in better condition.
