ISTANBUL - UN Assistant-Secretary-General and (UNICEF) Deputy Executive Director Kul Chandra Gautam welcomed Turkey's recent decree against honor killings and domestic violence.
Gautam proceeded from the eastern city of Van to Istanbul.
He told reporters at Istanbul's Ataturk Airport that Turkish government issued a well-prepared decree against honor killings and domestic violence.
Gautam also welcomed two other social initiatives about education of girls in rural areas and breast-feeding of babies in the first six months of their lives.
Honor killing is a practice steeped in village traditions in Turkey and other developing countries where massive migrations to urban areas have left families struggling to reconcile modern lifestyles. Researches estimated that many girls and women were murdered each year by their families in Turkey for being a dishonor for the rest of the family.
