ARINC: ''PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION IS NOT SO IMPORTANT''
Turkish Parliament Speaker Bulent Arinc who held a press conference regarding the end of legislative year said that presidential election was not a very important issue. When asked whether he would run for the presidential election, Arinc stated, ''it is not possible to say anything on this issue. You should wait for April 2007.'' Arinc said, ''parliamentarians will elect the president. It is not a very important incident.''
SUPPORT TO EU DECREASES
Eurobarometer, analyzing public opinion for the EU, conducted a survey showing that the number of Turkish people supporting the EU decreased. The survey said that the number of Turkish people supporting the EU dropped from 60 to 43 percent.

GUL ON HIS TALKS IN U.S.
Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul said, ''I can meet Hamas leader Khaled Meshaal again, if it serves for peace.'' Replying to questions of Milliyet reporter in Washington D.C., Gul said that regional countries demanded that Turkish authorities should meet Meshaal for a resolution to Israeli-Palestinian tension. Responding to a question on fight against terrorist organization PKK, Gul said that U.S. authorities thought that they should have done more in fight against terrorist organization PKK, stressing that there would be very different steps (to be taken by the U.S. administration) on this matter.
ASLAN: ''MUSLIM TURKISH PEOPLE SHARE MY VIEW''
Aslan Alpaslan who staged an armed attack on the chairman and members of the Council of State Second Chamber on May 17th told police that his actions were motivated by the decision on the headscarf which emerged from the Council of State. ''Muslim Turkish people share my view,'' Aslan claimed.

ECHR SUPPORTS ERBAKAN
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) ruled that there had been a violation of freedom of expression and right to a fair hearing in the case of former Turkish prime minister Necmettin Erbakan versus Turkey. The concerned chamber of the court, comprised by seven judges, decided that there had been a violation of Article 10 (freedom of expression) of the European Convention on Human Rights, by six votes to one.
FIRST LADY REFERENDUM
Ankara interprets Turkish PM Recep Tayyip Erdogan's words as a sign for a referendum; ''let's ask the public to see if they are ready for a first lady with a headscarf.'' Evaluating Erdogan's words, main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy leader Mustafa Ozyurek said, ''are they going to ask the public if they want secularism or not? This may cause regime debates.'' A Reuters reporter has asked Erdogan, ''are Turkish people ready for a first lady who covers her head with a turban?'' Erdogan responded by saying, ''this question must be asked to them.''

Koc Holding Executive Board Chairman Mustafa Koc said, ''I think that if there is not any important problem like war, there will be good developments in the Turkish economy. Central Bank first had some problems, but it solved most of them.''

Shared vision and structured dialogue document said that Turkey and the United States pledge themselves to work together on all issues of common concern, including promoting peace and stability in the broader Middle East through democracy. Main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy leader Onur Oymen asked, ''do we support the strategy pursued by the United States in Iraq and Iran?''
BOMB IN KADIKOY
A blast took place in front of a local headquarters of retired officers in Kadikoy district of Istanbul yesterday. Source said that a resonant bomb caused the blast which occurred at 10.30 p.m., stating that there were no casualties.

60 PEOPLE UNDER CUSTODY IN STOCK EXCHANGE OPERATION
Turkish police have detained 60 people in an operation against stock-market manipulation. Police department launched the operation on Monday and it is still under way.
SUPPORT TO EU DOWN
There are interesting results in the latest survey of Eurobarometer, analyzing public opinion for the EU. It said that the ratio of Turkish people who support the EU decreased to 43 percent. On the other hand, 50 percent of Turkish people are pleased with functioning of democracy in the country.

The 230th anniversary of Independence Day of the United States was also celebrated in Istanbul. Delivering a speech in the event, U.S. Ambassador to Turkey Ross Wilson said, ''Turkey's achievement in its efforts to form a free and prosperous society became hope for millions of people in the world.''
STRATEGIC MESSAGES FROM U.S.
Turkish Foreign Minister & Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul met U.S. President George Bush's National Security Adviser Stephen Hadley. Sources quoted Harley as telling Gul that relations between Turkey and the United States were stronger and sounder. Hadley said that they would work more effectively against terrorist organization PKK.

ECHR SAYS ERBAKAN'S RIGHT TO A FAIR HEARING VIOLATED
The European Court of Human Rights (EHCR) ruled that there had been a violation of freedom of expression and right to a fair hearing in the case of former Turkish prime minister Necmettin Erbakan versus Turkey. The concerned chamber of the court, comprised by seven judges, decided that there had been a violation of Article 10 (freedom of expression) of the European Convention on Human Rights, by six votes to one. The court held unanimously that there had been a violation of clause 1 of the Article 6 (right to a fair hearing) of the Convention.
IAEA SUPPORTS TURKEY
International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director-General Mohamed El Baradei held talks in Ankara yesterday. El Baradei stated that Turkey needed energy, noting that nuclear energy was ''a clean energy source''. El Baradei stressed that IAEA would extend great support to Turkey in this area.
