Turkey Puts Forward Its Candidacy For U.N. Security Council Membership

NEW YORK - Turkey put forward its candidacy for U.N. Security Council membership after an interval of 50 years.
Turkey voiced its desire during the U.N. Economic and Social Council meetings and it also informed U.N. units.
According to the procedure in U.N., verbal expression was enough for U.N. Security Council candidacy.
U.N. sources told A.A correspondent on Sunday that two members from the West Europe group would change in the period when Turkey would put forward its candidacy. If the number of candidates does not exceed two, Turkey will be automatically elected to U.N. Security Council. If a third country becomes a candidate, a voting will take place among the candidates.
The election of the candidate countries which will be members of U.N. Security Council covering the period of 2009-2010, will be held in U.N. General Assembly in October, 2008. If elected, Turkey's membership to the U.N. Security Council will start on January 1, 2009 and end on December 31, 2010. Turkey will also be the U.N. Security Council President when it is its turn due to alphabetic order. Turkey was lastly a member of U.N. Security Council in 1960s.
