EREGLI - A 2.5-meter mammoth tooth fossil was unearthed in Eregli town of central city of Konya, said Erksin Gulec, a lecturer at the Anthropology Department of Ankara University.
After examining the fossil tooth, predicted to be about 2 million years old, Gulec said that scientists thought that there were swamps and lakes in this region at the age of the mammoths.
Gulec noted that mammoths might have died as swamps were dried.
''In our excavations, we may find proofs that may help us understand the history of our world,'' he added.
2.5-meter mammoth tooth was found during the excavations in a sand pit on June 18th. The fossil could be unearthed in five pieces, and was taken to Eregli Museum.
