Michael Schumacher claimed his third victory of the 2006 Formula One season at Indianapolis on 2 July, winning the United States Grand Prix and trimming Fernando Alonso's championship lead to 19 points. The race was heavily disrupted on the opening lap when two separate accidents eliminated seven cars. Juan Pablo Montoya rear-ended Kimi Raikkonen, triggering a chain collision that involved Jenson Button, Nick Heidfeld (who barrel-rolled his BMW Sauber), Mark Webber, and Scott Speed. Separately, Christian Klien and Franck Montagny collided and both retired immediately. A safety car was deployed, the fourth consecutive race to require one.
Further attrition followed: Button later retired with low water pressure, and Tiago Monteiro exited on lap nine after contact with Takuma Sato.
Schumacher moved ahead of Massa during the pit-stop cycle by posting the race's fastest middle sector on his out-lap, then steadily extended his advantage over the final 44 laps. Jarno Trulli finished fourth using a one-stop strategy after starting from the pit lane. Alonso salvaged fifth, aided by Ralf Schumacher's late retirement. Rubens Barrichello took sixth, David Coulthard seventh, and Vitantonio Liuzzi claimed the final point after passing Nico Rosberg with 18 laps remaining.
