BUCHAREST - Seven people were dead and five missing following Wednesday's mudslide which engulfed several villages in northern Romania, according to new information published Thursday.
Authorities had previously said five people were killed and nine were missing.
Among the dead were a four-year-old girl and her grandmother who were carried away by the mudslide as they sought refuge on the roof of their house.
A total of 87 towns and villages in eight counties have been hit by heavy rainfall in the past two days, according to the interior ministry. Ten of these are without electricity.
Several national roads were buried in mud and traffic was interrupted by fallen trees.
Some 16,000 people in southern Romania were already left homeless after flooding in April when several dikes along the Danube gave way.
