SEFERI YILMAZ ARRESTED
Seferi Yilmaz whose bookstore in Semdinli town of the southeastern city of Hakkari was bombed on November 9th, 2005, was arrested yesterday on charges of being a member of the terrorist organization PKK. His arrest came just a day after the conviction of two noncommissioned officers for the bombing.
ANNAN TAKES ACTION
United Nations Secretary-General Kofi Annan has taken action after tension escalated between Turkey and the EU over the Cyprus issue. United Nations Under-Secretary-General Ibrahim Gambari will pay visits to Turkey, Greece and Cyprus in July.
ADAMKUS EXTENDS FULL SUPPORT
President Valdas Adamkus of Lithuania, who is currently in Ankara on a state visit upon invitation of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer, extended full support to Turkey's EU membership process. President Adamkus said that he could not think of an EU without Turkey.

UNITED STATES REMEMBERS THEM
U.S. Under Secretary of Defense Eric Edelman eulogized former presidents Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, Ismet Inonu and Turgut Ozal. Speaking at an annual conference hosted by the Washington Institute for Near Eastern Policy, Edelman said that Ataturk, Inonu and Ozal were exemplary leaders. He added that today's political leaders should imitate them in regard to secularism, courage and vision.
TALAT TO MEET PAPADOPOULOS
President Mehmet Ali Talat of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) will meet Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos for the first time in two years. The meeting will take place in the buffer zone in Lefkosa on July 3rd upon appointment of Christophe Girod as the third member of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus. The two will discuss efforts to determine the fate of missing people from both sides from the 1960s and 1970s.

CENTRAL BANK KEEPS RATES STEADY
Turkish Central Bank left key interest rates unchanged, but said it would not hesitate to tighten policy if it was necessary amid rising inflation. The Central Bank's Monetary Policy Committee said that the probability of rates rising was smaller than that of rates staying the same in the short term. It also reiterated that its decisions would be based on the premise that inflation would approach its target in 2007.
KARAKIN II IN ISTANBUL
Karakin II, head of the Armenian Orthodox Church, arrived in Istanbul as the guest of Greek-Orthodox Patriarch Bartholomew I and Turkish Armenian Patriarch Mesrob II. Meanwhile, nearly 50 people protested arrival of Karakin II in front of the Istanbul's Ataturk Airport.

VOTES OF AKP INCREASE
A public survey revealed that despite political tension and recent economic developments, votes of the ruling Justice & Development Party (AKP) increased by 2.9 percent.
EU DISCUSSES TURKEY
The European Parliament debated the Turkey Report for 2006 yesterday. EU Commissioner for Enlargement Olli Rehn said that Turkey should fulfil its obligation to open its ports to Greek Cypriot vessels to avoid serious problems in its EU entry talks. ''If we want to avoid a major problem in the autumn, Turkey needs to stick to its word without hesitation. Clearly there is an alternative to a major accident, provided the parties stop complaining about past injustices and rather work on future solutions with a pragmatic approach,'' Rehn said.

ECHR TO DEBATE ELECTORAL THRESHOLD
The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) decided to debate application of two Turkish citizens who said that 10 percent electoral threshold in Turkey should be lifted.
MGK TO CONVENE
Turkish National Security Council (NSC) will convene tomorrow under the chairmanship of President Ahmet Necdet Sezer. Recent developments both in Turkey and the world will be discussed at the meeting.

''IF PROMISES ARE NOT KEPT, NO ONE SHOULD EXPECT US TO OPEN OUR PORTS''
''If the promises are not fulfilled, no one should expect us to open ports and airports,'' Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said at a parliamentary group meeting of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP). Stressing that Turkey's EU accession process should not be associated with the Cyprus issue, Erdogan added, ''first, all isolations should be lifted. Then, we will fulfil our commitments.''
TURKISH CITIZEN KILLED IN AFGHANISTAN
A Turkish driver and three Afghan guards were killed in an attack on a Turkish construction company. To other Afghan guards were injured in the attack in the western Farah province of Afghanistan.

SUPPORT FROM TUSIAD
During their meeting with Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkish Industrialists' & Businessmen's Association (TUSIAD) Chairman Omer Sabanci and Mustafa Koc extended the business world's support to Turkey's EU membership process. Sabanci said that they did not have any concerns about the EU membership.
''ENERGY SAFETLY SHOULD BE TIGHTENED''
Speaking at the Energy Conference, Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, ''we have to tighten energy safety. Everyone should admit that transportation of oil through the Turkish Straits is not sustainable.''

BTC TO BE OFFICIALLY INAUGURATED
The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) oil pipeline will be officially inaugurated on July 13th. A number of leaders will be in attendance at the inauguration of the pipeline, which will transport crude oil 1,760 km from the Azeri-Chirag-Guneshli oil field in the Caspian Sea to the Mediterranean Sea. But construction of the road between Yumurtalik and Ceyhan could not be finalized yet. Leaders will use the road to attend the inauguration.
