ANKARA - World Peace Day is celebrated with various activities in the whole country.
Halil Imrek, the spokesman of Adana Peace Commission composed of some political parties and non-governmental organizations, issued a press release in front of Association of Human Rights' (IHD) branch in southern Adana province. Imrek said they were against sending Turkish soldiers to Iraq.
In central Eskisehir province, a group which is member of Democracy Platform organized a ''Peace Walk.'' The group released a public statement and noted that the problems of the country could not be sorted out by sending soldiers to Iraq.
Members of Kocaeli Basic Rights and Freedoms Association issued a statement and called for support to Iraqi people.
Trade Union KESK's branch in Van released white pigeons into the air for World Peace Day. Omer Isik, the Term President of KESK Van Offices Platform issued a press statement and asserted that global capitalism threatened the future of the humanity.
Meanwhile, police intervened in the joint press statement of political parties and NGOs namely DEHAP, EMEP, ODP and IHD in western Aydýn province when the group shouted slogans supporting a terrorist organization. Later, the group dispersed peacefully.
RIOT IN IZMIR ON WORLD PEACE DAY
There was riot in western Izmir province on World Peace Day on Monday.
A group of persons, who convened in front of Konak TELEKOM building, later walked to Cumhuriyet Square. When police didn't permit the group to enter the square, demonstrators attacked the official and civilian cars with stones and sticks. The police used truncheon and tear gas to end the riot.
Demonstrators who escaped from the police broke windows of many shops, banks and bus stations nearby. Police teams also sprayed water from panzers to disperse the demonstrators.
Many demonstrators were detained, while some policemen and demonstrators were injured in the incidents.
30 PEOPLE DETAINED, SIX POLICEMEN AND TWO JOURNALISTS INJURED
Six policemen and two journalists were injured and 30 people including 10 women were detained during a riot in western Izmir province on World Peace Day.
When police didn't permit a group to enter the city's main square, demonstrators attacked the vehicles parked at the spot with stones and sticks. The police used truncheon and tear gas to end the riot.
Demonstrators who escaped from the police broke windows of many shops, banks and bus stations nearby. Police teams also sprayed water from panzers to disperse the demonstrators.
Izmir Security Chief Halil Tatas told the A.A correspondent that 30 people including 10 women were detained.
He said that six policemen were injured, but they were in good health.
