WASHINGTON - The US military death toll in Iraq reached 2,500 Thursday with the death of a marine, a Pentagon spokesman said.
Lieutenant Colonel Jeremy Martin said the latest combat death raised the overall toll for Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF) to 2,500, including 1,972 service members killed in action.
"We know it was an OIF casualty," he said of the most recent death. "It was a marine."
The Marine Corps would provide no information on the marine or the circumstances surrounding his or her death until 24 hours after the family has been notified, a spokeswoman said.
