AUGUST 30 VICTORY DAY TO BE CELEBRATED THROUGHOUT TURKEY
Turkish nation will celebrate August 30 Victory Day. August 30 Victory Day will be celebrated throughout Turkey and the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Naval Forces Commander Admiral Ozden Ornek and Air Forces Commander Gen. H. Ibrahim Firtina visited the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Founder of modern and secular Republic of Turkey on Friday. Ornek and Firtina laid a wreath of red and white carnations to the mausoleum, and observed a minute of silence out of respect to Great Leader Ataturk.

COLLECTIVE BARGAINING BETWEEN GOVERNMENT AND CIVIL SERVANTS TO CONTINUE ON SATURDAY
Agreement was not reached between the government and unions of civil servants during Friday's meeting about the increase in wages of civil servants for the year 2003. Collective bargaining will continue on Saturday. Confederation of Public Workers Trade Unions (KESK) Chairman Sami Evren talked to journalists after the meeting held in the Prime Ministry under the leadership of State Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Ali Sahin. Evren said that no agreement was reached in the meeting about the increase in wages of civil servants for the year 2003. Noting that they demanded 401 million TL, Evren said that Deputy Prime Minister Sahin offered them 140 million TL.

CALL TO LINK LIONS TO ATHENS
Inal Aydinoglu, who spoke at Turkey Lions District Governor Council meeting, said seven Lions Clubs in Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) were demanded to be linked to Greece, and asked for the views of TRNC President Rauf Denktas. Denktas told them to convey their uneasiness to the center in the United States.

MOBILE POWER PLANTS TO BE MOVED TO IRAQ
Energy and Natural Resources Minister Hilmi Guler said some mobile power plants in Turkey would be moved to Iraq aiming to meet energy needs of Iraq in some places.
Guler issued a written statement and said a preliminary agreement was reached aiming to meet energy need of Iraq in rebuilding process.
Guler in the written statement said a 500 megawatt package was prepared.
Guler said his ministry and Iraqi officials continue studies on new projects.

PRIME MINISTER ERDOGAN SAYS TURKEY SHOULD SEND SOLDIERS TO IRAQ
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that Turkey should send soldiers to Iraq. Replying to questions on CNN Turk channel, Erdogan said that a consensus should be reached on the issue and stressed that first of all Chief of General Staff, President Sezer and the ministers should have consultation on the issue. Erdogan said that the government would also continue its financial discipline in 2004.

SUREYYA AYHAN RANKS SECOND IN THE WOMEN'S 1,500 METERS SEMI-FINAL
Sureyya Ayhan recorded four minutes 03.57 seconds in women's 1,500 meters semi-final, and ranked the second on Friday in the 9th World Athletics Championships. Romanian Maria Cioncan ranked the first by recording four minutes 03.41 seconds. Ayhan will compete in women's 1,500 meters final in the 9th World Athletics Championships in Paris on Sunday.

PARLIAMENTARIANS RETURN FROM IRAQ
Justice and Development Party (AK Party) parliamentarians Turhan Comez and Cevdet Erdol who wrapped up their contacts in Iraq and returned to Turkey conveyed their impressions to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
Comez said Iraqi people wanted Turkish soldiers under the U.N. umbrella or autonomously, stating that, ''if Turkey soldiers are not placed in a region purified from the United States, there will be serious problems.''
Comez and Erdol also conveyed their views to Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul.

13TH ROUND OF TALKS FOR AEGEAN TO START ON MONDAY
The 13th round of exploratory talks between Turkey and Greece will be held in Ankara.
The 13th round of exploratory talks, which had been carried on between foreign ministry undersecretaries of Turkey and Greece, would be held in Ankara on September 2, 2003.
Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Ugur Ziyal will head the Turkish delegation while Greek Foreign Ministry Secretary General Anastase Skopelitis will chair the Greek delegation in the meetings.

CHP GROUP DEPUTY CHAIRMAN OZYUREK SAYS AK PARTY ESCAPES FROM REFERENDUM
Republican People's Party (CHP) group deputy chairman Mustafa Ozyurek said that Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government which launched some studies to limit authorities of President was escaping from referendum.

STATE MINISTER ATALAY SAYS PUBLIC SECTOR CAN NO LONGER SOLVE UNEMPLOYMENT ISSUE
State Minister Besir Atalay said that the government was giving priority to fight against corruption and unemployment. Stating that it was impossible for people to find jobs in the public sector, Atalay said that they started to take measures to encourage private sector and export. Atalay who gave information about unemployment said that the number of unemployed people was about 3 million in Turkey.

HOPE FOR COMPROMISE
As government proposed 140 million Turkish lira to civil servants for increase in wages of civil servants for the year 2003, Confederation of Public Workers Trade Unions (KESK) proposed 400 million Turkish Lira and Turkish Public Workers Trade Union (Kamu-Sen) proposed 264 million lira. Government also proposed 13 percent increase to salaries of civil servants for 2004.

Victory Day, which is the anniversary of Anatolia's gaining its independence, will be celebrated throughout the country. The first ceremony will take place in Anitkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the Founder of Modern Turkish Republic. General Staff will host a reception in the evening.

ERDOGAN HAS POSITIVE VIEW ON SENDING OF SOLDIERS
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said he individually has a positive view on sending of soldiers to Iraq.
Erdogan refrained from setting a certain date for the motion, yet stated that, ''it will come in October with a great possibility. This will become clear after opening of the Parliament.''
Erdogan said that his personal view about sending soldiers to Iraq was positive, adding that yet he had certain conditions. He didn't comment on the conditions.
