ISTANBUL - Representatives from several civil organizations on Monday held a demonstration in Istanbul and protested start of actual negotiations between Turkey and the European Union (EU).
They gathered in front of the EU Information Center in Taksim Square, holding banners which read, "EU: National Danger", "EU Is Refinement Of Lausanne", "End To 47-Year-Old Deception" and "No To EU, Fully Independent Turkey".
Independent Turkish Orthodox Patriarchate's press and public relations officer Sevgi Erenerol said, "Turkey will absolutely not be allowed to enter the EU through the negotiations. It is not the membership whose way is paved but it is the swift implementation of Sevres project and division of the country."
"June 12th is not the start of joyful days but the first day of disappointment," she added.
Later a black wreath was laid in front of EU Information Center.
The group dispersed peacefully.
