LUXEMBOURG - The EU General Affairs & Foreign Relations Council has overcome the Greek Cypriot obstacle in front of the opening of actual accession talks with Turkey by calling on Ankara to fulfil its commitments stemming from the Association Partnership Agreement.
Sources told the A.A on Monday that EU foreign ministers paved the way for actual accession talks by adding some expressions to the common position paper.
In the paper, the EU highlighted importance of fulfillment of Turkey's commitments stemming from the Association Partnership Agreement.
If Turkey fails to fulfil its commitments, the whole accession process will be affected, the EU said.
Sources said that the EU referred to Turkey's Cyprus Declaration on September 21st, 2005.
The paper also notes that the actual negotiations could go back to the chapter heading of "Science and Research" if it was seen necessary according to the developments.
