ISTANBUL - Turkish giants Fenerbahce said Monday they had cancelled the contract of German coach Christophe Daum following the loss of the Turkish league title to arch rivals Galatasaray.
"The lawyers of the two sides are working to formally terminate the contract," Fenerbahce deputy president Nihat Ozdemir told reporters.
He said the club might announce its new coach next week, but declined to say who was being considered.
The sacking of Daum had been expected since the end of the Turkish league last month.
The German coach joined the Istanbul club in 2003 on a three-year contract and he took them to the league title in both of the first two years.
But it was Galatasaray who triumphed last season after a dramatic last round of games when Fenerbahce could only draw, while their rivals won.
Fenerbahce also lost the final of the Turkish Cup to their other big Istanbul rivals, Besiktas.
