BRUSSELS - US Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld informed NATO defense ministers Thursday of the death of Al-Qaeda leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who was killed in a US air strike in Iraq, a US official said.
"The secretary in the course of his intervention in the North Atlantic Council did discuss Zarqawi's death with his colleagues," the official said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
Rumsfeld, who is attending a NATO defense ministers meeting here, has given no public statement yet on the US air strike on a safe house near Baquba in which Zarqawi was killed.
Spokesmen for the secretary have declined comment on the Zarqawi's elimination or its impact on the insurgency in Iraq.
