NEWSWEEK EULOGIZES TURKEY'S FIGHT AGAINST PKK/KADEK
The Newsweek, the leading news magazine of the United States, eulogized Turkey's fight against the terrorist organization PKK/KADEK. The magazine noted that Turkey constituted an important model in efforts to prevent the suicide attacks of terrorist organizations.

THREAT
Holding a press conference in Istanbul, representatives of Iraqi Ulama Delegation, the authority organ of Iraqi Sunnis, said, ''if Turkey decides to dispatch its soldiers to Iraq, we will meet them like U.S. soldiers. The United States aims at using Turkish soldiers as a shield to protect its soldiers. We do not want it.''

ECEVIT TO BE DISCHARGED TODAY
Former Prime Minister and Democratic Left Party (DSP) leader Bulent Ecevit has undergone a two-day check-up at Gulhane Military Medical Academy (GATA). Ecevit is expected to the discharged from the hospital later today.

SPECIAL TEAM FOR INVESTIGATION INTO IMAR BANKASI
A special team from Directorate General of Security Smuggling Department will also participate in interrogation of six people who were taken into custody under the investigation into Imar Bankasi. Financial Bureau teams arrested executive board members of Imar Bankasi Gurol Demirkol, Sami Bulut and Birol Cilingir, deputy director general Mehmet Koray Ozkaya and administrators Dilek Atici and Gul Handan Ertargin who were among 26 people wanted upon the direction of Sisli Prosecutor's Office. Prosecutor's Office gave police an additional four days to keep those people under arrest.

CICEK SAYS SHORTCOMINGS IN SUPERVISION ALSO PLAYS ROLE IN MANY BANKS' GOING BANKRUPT
Justice Minister Cemil Cicek said that shortcomings in supervision also played a role in many banks' going bankrupt. Cicek stated, ''20 banks went bankrupt. Those banks were supervised, but people in supervision boards did not make their duties. All of those will be concluded.'

TURKEY BEATEN BY ITALY 76-64
Italy was ranked first in the Efes Pilsen World Cup 2 International Basketball Tournament. During yesterday's final match, Italy beat Turkey 76-64 and became champion. While Turkey was ranked second, Serbia-Montenegro came on the third place in the tournament. Italy beat Turkey 76-64 in final of the tournament. The game was 35-35 going into the second half, but Italy dominated the rest of the way to win the five-day tournament. Kaya Peker led Turkey with 23 points.

IMF TO COME TO TURKEY IN OCTOBER
The government which succeeded in the fifth review with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) is getting prepared for a test. There is a change in schedule of the sixth review which was earlier announced to be held in November. IMF will send a delegation to Turkey at the beginning of October to give a shape to 2004 budget.

NORTHERN IRAQ POLICY TO PROGRESS WITHOUT TURKEY
Kirkuk Foundation Chairman Prof. Dr. Suphi Saatci criticized the foreign policy of the government. Noting that Patriotic Union of Iraqi Kurdistan (PUK) leader Jalal Talabani and Iraqi Kurdish Democratic Party (IKDP) leader Massoud Barzani had encouraged from Turkey's attitude, Prof. Dr. Saatci said that Turkey had done nothing but watched the developments.

A STATUE OF ATATURK TO BE ERECTED IN MEXICO
The inauguration of the statue of Ataturk, which was financed by the Confederation of Turkish Employers' Unions (TISK) and which will be placed on La Reforma boulevard in Mexico City, will be held on October 29, 2003. Labor and Social Security Minister Murat Basesgioglu and National Defense Minister Vecdi Gonul are expected to attend the inauguration to be held on the 80th anniversary of foundation of the Republic of Turkey.

IRAQ TO BE HIGH ON AGENDA
The Council of Ministers will convene under the chairmanship of Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan later today. The issues of recent attacks on Turkmen in Kirkuk and latest developments about dispatch of Turkish soldiers to Iraq are expected to be high on agenda of the meeting.

''GOVERNMENT DOES NOT UNDERSTAND DEMOCRACY''
Confederation of Public Workers Trade Unions (KESK) Chairman Sami Evren reacted to Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who described demonstration of KEKS members in Ankara as ''antidemocratic''. Evren said that Prime Minister Erdogan and the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government could not understand the democracy. Referring to events in the demonstration, Evren said, ''security forces locked Ankara. Therefore, they were responsible for those unpleasant events.''

''WE HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING DEVELOPMENTS IN KIRKUK''
Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, ''as you know, Turkish Ambassador to Iraq held a meeting with Turkmen. Two peshmerga fighters were detained following the events. We have been following the developments in Kirkuk. Our officials have been continuing to hold meetings both in Washington D.C. and Baghdad.''

IHA CORRESPONDENT INJURED
Abdulmuhi Casin, the correspondent of Ihlas News Agency who has covered the recent events in Kirkuk, was shot by peshmerga fighters of the Patriotic Union of Iraqi Kurdistan (PUK). Later, he was left in a rural area. Turkmen found and took him to hospital. Doctors said that Casin was in critical condition. Meanwhile, peshmerga fighters seized Casin's camera and automobile.

TENSION IN KIRKUK DECREASES, GOVERNMENT FOLLOWS DEVELOPMENTS
Tension between Turkmens and peshmergas in Kirkuk started to ease. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said that the situation in the region became calm and stated that what was necessary regarding the incident was done. Erdogan said that developments in Kirkuk were being followed closely and added that there was a calm atmosphere in the region currently. Meanwhile, 23 policemen were injured on Sunday in clash erupted between security forces and a group of people, who gathered in front of bureau of the Patriotic Union of Iraqi Kurdistan (PUK) in Ankara on Sunday to protest recent events in Kirkuk. Erdogan who condemned the incident said that those kinds of incidents could not solve problems in Iraq.

ALL OF ENERGY COMPANIES MAKE PROFIT
Energy companies made profit in 2002. There are 12 energy companies in the list of 500 industrial organizations of Turkey announced by the Istanbul Chamber of Industry (ISO). All of the companies included in the list made profit in 2002. Park Electric and Cukurova Electric are also among those companies.
