PUNISHMENT TO LATE JUSTICE
European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) sentenced Turkey to pay 14,000 Euro compensation as it delayed the ''paternity suit'' of singer Emrah.
Ebru Colak stated that Tayfun Engin, born in 1991, was the son of singer Emrah and gave a legal struggle from 1992 to 2001 to conclude this case.
On January 18th, 2001 Supreme Court of Appeals approved that Tayfun was the son of Emrah.
Colak filed charges against this long trial process at the ECHR. The ECHR decided that Turkey should pay a compensation of 14,000 Euro.
The ECHR said the legal process which could end very easily with a paternity test was concluded in 8 years and 9 months, noting that Turkey contradicted the principle of the ECHR to conclude a case within a reasonable time.
NICE GESTURE PLEASES SWEDISH KING
President Ahmet Necdet Sezer and his wife Semra Sezer welcomed King Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden and his wife Queen Silvia at an official ceremony in Cankaya Palace.
Prior to the visit, Sezer and his wife wanted menu of the dinner which was hosted for then Swedish Crown Prince Gustaf Adolf (grandfather of King Gustaf) and Princess Louise on October 3rd, 1934.
Sezer published the same invitation that was published for the dinner hosted by Ataturk for Crown Prince 72 years ago.
The King and the Queen were very pleased over this nice gesture of Sezer.

SAME OBSTINACY FOR 10 YEARS
Turkish coast guard boat went to the region after it was noticed that two Greek fishing boats and a Greek coast guard boat waited for a long time around the Kardak islets.
The Turkish boat warned them to ''leave'' the area but the Greek boat made maneuvers one after the other for half an hour.
At around 12.30 p.m., two boats and 1 war ship came from the Greek side. After some time the boats have withdrawn to their own territorial waters and started to monitor the islets.
The tension once again escalated when a Greek boat again came to the region at noon.
The Greek fishing boat and a coast guard boat approached the islets by 20 meters. A Greek helicopter came to the spot at 14:20 hours and toured above Kardak. The tension continued till evening.
FIVE STAR EDUCATION TO EAST
With the aim of having engineers, doctors, judges and teachers go to the east and southeast of Turkey, Bilkent University will open schools in the regions in international standards and give students scholarship.
According to a draft law which the government has submitted to the parliament, Bilkent University will establish education institutions in Ankara, Erzurum, Malatya, Sanliurfa and Van.

CEMENT TRICK FOR PEOPLE WHO HOPE TO BUY A HOUSE
A cartel that emerged in cement and concrete sectors affected the prices. With the revival of construction market, the cement and ready-mixed concrete producers began raising their prices.
Consequently it raises the costs of resident construction. Factories began selling 1 ton of cement for 120 USD. 1 ton of cement is being exported for 45 USD.
MEMBERSHIP GUARANTEE
Russian Foreign Minister Lavrov spoke to Sabah newspaper prior to his visit to Ankara. About Turkey's UN Security Council non-permanent membership, Lavrov said, ''If you launch such an initiative, we would be pleased to show our positive stance.''

THRIFT TO DEATH
''Thrift circular'' of the Health Ministry put a blow on those who have to take medicine continuously.
The IMF wanted a 1.5 billion USD of savings in health expenses during its last review meetings with the government executives. With a circular issued on May 15th, the Health Ministry said, those who have cholesterol problem can only take their medicine if they prove their cholesterol levels.
DOG FIGHT IN SEA
Tension which started in the Aegean following collision of Turkish and Greek F-16 planes and was followed by detention of three Turkish citizens in Crete on charges of espionage, continued yesterday in Kardak.
There was a tag between the Greek coast guard boat and Turkish coast guard boat which tried to remove two Greek fishing boats from Kardak.
The two boats maneuvered around the islets for half an hour. Greece sent two coast guard boats, warship and a helicopter. Later both the Turkish and the Greek boats withdrew to their own territorial waters and started to monitor Kardak.

CLASH WITH PKK IN SIRNAK: TWO DEAD
Private Salih Cam was killed in a clash with the PKK terrorists during an operation in Cudi mountain. Meanwhile, private Metin Gungor was killed when he stepped on a land mine that was planted by the terrorists.
Two terrorists were killed in operations.
LAWSUIT AGAINST BAYDEMIR
A file has been charged against Diyarbakir Mayor Osman Baydemir who assigned a municipality ambulance to carry the body of a PKK terrorist and against three other municipal personnel for improper use of public vehicles under Turkey's transportation laws.
The indictment said, ''the municipality suffered a loss because of the money that was paid to the driver of the ambulance.''

INVESTMENT INITIATIVES FROM SWEDEN
Visit of King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden to Ankara has started. The first target of 50-people Swedish businessmen delegation is to increase number of tourists visiting Turkey, to one million. Ericsson, Telia Sonera and Volvo will enter the Middle Eastern and Asian markets via Turkey.
DREAM BECOMES TRUE
Azerbaijani oil which has reached Turkey through Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan oil pipeline will be loaded to tankers today. Turkey's new target is Samsun-Ceyhan line.
''British Hawtharne'' is the name of the first tanker that will ship the Azerbaijani oil that has reached Ceyhan on May 29th.

Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said, ''Turkey's esteem in foreign countries has been growing. As our political esteem has doubled, also our exports has doubled and risen to 73.4 billion USD. The target of the Justice & Development Party (AKP) government is to open the horizons of Turkey, break the chains and settle Turkey's relations on strong basis.''
ARMENIANS AFRAID OF ARCHIVES
Prime Ministry State Archives Director General Sarinay said, ''Armenian diaspora is afraid of the archives.''
Sarinay said, ''come and examine the Ottoman archives as you wish. All the information and documents exist in the Ottoman archives.''

BUCHAREST SEEKS SUPPORT FOR BLACK SEA INITIATIVE
Political and military initiatives regarding the Black Sea region have been continuing following the energy crisis in which Russia played the leading role and the U.S. efforts to seek support for alternative energy routes.
This time Romania appeared with a new initiative. Romanian administration expects regional countries to visit Bucharest between June 4th and 6th, for ''Black Sea Dialogue and Partnership Forum'' summit.
Romanian President Traian Basescu said they aim to establish a political mechanism in which joint problems like drug and human smuggling would be discussed. Basescu said participation of Turkey and Russia in this initiative has critical importance.

PROSECUTOR ASKS ABOUT ERGENEKON AND PATRIOTIC
Hamza Keles, the prosecutor who investigates the armed attack inside the Council of State, requested information from the ministry and Security Department about the Ergenekon and Patriotic Union of Forces.
Bahattin Er, who was caught in front of the Prime Ministry building with a gun, said he thought the Prime Ministry was the Security Department. Separately, traffic police caught two other people, who described themselves as the ''soldiers of God'' as they were about to stage an armed attack in Dikimevi district.
A SHAME FOR TURKEY
The Times recalled that Turkey got the 2,500-year-old Karun Treasure after a very big legal fight, stating that, ''given that it has been stolen is a great shame.''
