BRUSSELS - Detailed screening meeting on environment (within the framework of Turkey's full membership negotiations with the EU) took a start in Brussels, Belgium on Monday.
Turkish Environment & Forestry Ministry and State Planning Organization are leading the Turkish delegation at the meeting that will last for a week.
Turkey's adjustment to the acquis on environmental obligations, environmental impact analysis, strategic assessment reports, regulations on wild animals and zoos, preservation of animal species, mine wastes, toxic wastes, potable water, air quality, fuel quality, noise pollution, emission trade are expected to be discussed at the meetings.
EU acquis has more than 200 fundamental laws on environment.
As regards the environment, EU asks Turkey to sign Kyoto Protocol (annexed to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change), Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context (Espoo Convention), and Aarhus convention. The EU also requires that Turkey implement its laws on industry pollution and risk management.
