ANKARA - The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on Friday that the United Nations (U.N.) Security Council's the latest resolution on Iraq coincided with Turkey's approach on the issue and that's why it was pleasing.
Releasing a statement, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recalled that the U.N. Security Council adopted a new resolution about Iraq on Thursday and said that the no. 1500 resolution welcomed the establishment of the Governing Council of Iraq on July 13, 2003, as an important step towards the formation by the people of Iraq of an internationally recognized, representative government that would exercise the sovereignty of Iraq.
The today's statement which recalled the statement on July 17 released by Foreign Ministry said that establishment of the Council was the first step in the process of formation of new sovereign political structure in Iraq and it reiterated that Turkey supported transition period to be completed in a way that Iraq's sovereignty, territorial integrity and national unity would be taken under guaranty.
The statement recalled that Turkey would be in cooperation with all sides of Iraqi nation and Iraqi Governing Council and stressed that the latest resolution of Security Council reconfirmed sovereignty and territorial integrity of Iraq.
''Thus, U.N. Security Council's latest resolution on Iraq coincides with Turkey's approach on the issue and it is pleasing,'' the statement said.
It noted that the resolution also established the U.N. Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) which would have a one-year mandate at the first stage to support the U.N. Secretary General to fulfill his mission which was determined by no. 1483 resolution of Security Council.
''Turkey has always defended that the U.N. should play a key role in transition period and re-building process of Iraq. Turkey welcomed this role's being put on a more definite and concrete foundation by formation of the U.N. Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI). Turkey will help this mission's fulfilling its duty successfully.''
