ANKARA - ''Turkey will continue its cooperation and solidarity with both Serbia and Montenegro following a referendum in Montenegro on independence from Serbia,'' said Namik Tan, spokesman of Turkish Foreign Ministry.
In a weekly press conference, Tan recalled that the people of Montenegro voted in favor of the independence from Serbia in the referendum held in Montenegro on May 20th, 2006.
Stating that the referendum was held in accordance with the rules that were determined by the international community and it was monitored by the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), Tan underlined, ''Turkey will continue having the same cooperation and solidarity with both Serbia and Montenegro as in the past.''
Tan indicated that he hoped that the results of the referendum displaying the free will of Montenegrin people would contribute to stability and prosperity of both Serbia and Montenegro as well as the democracy and peace in the Balkans.
56.3 percent of Montenegrin people cast votes in favor of independence in the referendum last Sunday.
