ISTANBUL - Firefighters were battling a huge blaze which broke out Wednesday in the cargo section of Istanbul`s Ataturk airport, the hub of international air travel in Turkey, an airport official said.
The cause of the fire was not immediately known.
An airport management official told AFP that there were no casualties in the fire that erupted in Terminal C, which is located at some distance to the international and domestic flights terminal.
No flights have been suspended and all necessary measures were in place, the official added.
Television footage showed billows of dark smoke and flames over the airport which is situated on the European side of the city straddling the Bosphorus Strait.
Fire-fighting planes could be seen flying overhead.
Several ambulances were also dispatched to the area.
