ANKARA - Turkish Foreign Minister Abdullah Gul condemned this morning's armed attack on the Council of State judges.
After meeting his Colombian counterpart Carolina Barco in Ankara, Gul said, ''it is unfortunately a grave incident. We consider this attack on a high court as an attack staged against us.''
On comments that the Council of State's decision on Islamic-style headscarf caused this attack, Gul said, ''this attack can never be justified, and nothing can alleviate it.''
Referring to the bomb attacks against Cumhuriyet daily, Gul said that efforts are under way to find the assailants. ''All these are the matters that our government is dealing with in a serious and careful way,'' he stressed.
The attack occurred in the Council of State Chamber 2 during a committee meeting. Five judges have been wounded in the attack. The gunman, who was identified as lawyer Aslan Alpaslan from the Istanbul Bar, was detained and taken to the Anti-Terror Department for interrogation.
