ANKARA - German State of Saxonia State Minister Hermann Winkler and an accompanying delegation met Turkish Parliamentary Human Rights Watch Commission Chairman Mehmet Elkatmis today.
Elkatmis told the German delegation that Turkey's EU membership will be beneficial to both Turkey and Germany.
''We see the EU as a project of civilizations and therefore wish to become a full member,'' said Elkatmis.
Winkler told Elkatmis that his delegation and he are in Turkey to see Turkey's EU process first hand and form up conclusions.
The German delegation asked Elkatmis questions on the reform process in Turkey and when Turkey will reach EU standards in human rights.
Elkatmis stressed that the reform process is still going on in Turkey. ''With the reforms made, maltreatment and torture have become history,'' told Elkatmis.
Elkatmis noted that human rights violations may take place anywhere in the world. ''The important thing is that Turkey has decided to eradicate human rights violations,'' added Elkatmis.
Earlier in the day, Winkler and his delegation were received by Turkish Foreign Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Abdullah Gul.
