KALE - Deniz Baykal, the leader of the Republican People's Party (CHP) said he hoped President Sezer to veto the constitutional amendment which paved the way to sale of the lands which lost the character of being forest.
If the law was adopted by the parliament again, he hoped a referendum would take place, said Baykal noting that even the possibility of new elections could come to agenda due to the result of such a referendum.
Talking to citizens in Kale town of southern Antalya province, Baykal explained his ideas about the constitutional amendment which paved the way to sale of lands which lost the character of being forests anymore.
Baykal said that he expected President Sezer to veto the constitutional amendment, adding that if this was the case, the issue would be discussed in the parliament again. Hoping holding of a referendum on the issue, Baykal said that ''we will launch efforts by making cooperation with foundations, associations, chambers, and non-governmental organizations for rejection of the constitutional amendment. If the constitutional amendment is rejected, this will cause a big weakness in the government and even elections can come to agenda.''
